The love of beer is a worldwide phenomenon that started thousands of years ago. Today, this drink is highly popular in every available form, from inexpensive canned beers in stores to high-end craft beers offered at bars. Here are some interesting details about the history of beer that you can share with friends during your next visit to the bar.

The Early Origins of Beer

Long before beer became a staple drink at the bar, it was enjoyed by ancient civilizations around the world. The first recorded discovery of beer was around 3400 B.C. in Iran – but beer likely came into existence long before that. Based on archaeological findings and records, the Babylonians had around 20 different recipes for making it, and some Egyptian Pharaohs were buried with large tubs of the drink.

The oldest written instructions for beer were contained in an Iranian poem, which was etched onto clay tablets. In addition to spelling out the ingredients for the drink, the tablet contains brewing instructions and praise for the Sumerian goddess of beer.

barBeyond enjoyment, historians believe that safety is one of the main reasons ancient civilizations drank beer so frequently. Potable water was in short supply, but beer was simple to make and the alcohol content had a sanitizing effect that made it a safer choice.

Beer in Medieval Times

Beer began to take on its modern form during the Dark Ages. Monasteries often had onsite breweries and monks are believed to be responsible for many of the modern developments in brewing, including hops and cold storage.

Later on, Belgium, Germany, and the British Isles emerged as brewing hubs, and British brewers created various types of beers like pale ales, porters, and stouts. Brewers had to come up with innovative methods for preserving and shipping beer since they were sending it throughout the British Empire.

Beer continued to grow in popularity throughout the world, although its growth was briefly stunted by Prohibition in the United States. After the repeal of Prohibition in the 1930s, the United States was in a deep depression, so brewers found ways to make beer more affordable. Many of the brands enjoyed at the bar today were created during this time.
