Having trees on your property can add to the beauty and curb appeal of your landscape. Unfortunately, like all living organisms, they are susceptive to illnesses that can mar their appearance and destroy their health. In order to avoid the need for tree removal, it’s helpful to be familiar with common tree diseases so you can spot them before it’s too late for treatment. Below are three types of tree fungi to watch out for.

3 Common Fungal Tree Diseases

1. Powdery Mildew

Frequently found in shrubs like lilac and honeysuckle, powdery mildew is also common in oak and sycamore trees. The fungus grows on the top of tree leaves, producing white or gray growths that look like powder. Because it thrives in dark and moist areas, the mildew is frequently found in trees growing in shady, crowded areas. In most cases, tree removal is not necessary, and a tree company can treat the fungus with a bacteria-killing fungicide. They may also suggest regular tree pruning to ensure proper airflow between branches.

2. Anthracnose

While the symptoms may vary depending on the type of fungi the tree is infected with, early signs typically include spots and rot on the leaves. Eventually, the fungus will cause a tree to lose its leaves prematurely and has the potential to kill the tree if it progresses too far.

3. Apple Scab

Scab typically appears on the leaves of crabapple and apple trees in early spring. It creates dark and velvety spores and causes the leaves to turn yellow. If you notice these symptoms, call a tree service professional immediately. They’ll be able to avoid the need for tree removal if they can trim the infected leaves before the fungus spreads. They can also apply fungicide earlier in the season to help control outbreaks.
