In the age of COVID-19, communities in the Boston area have been wondering whether construction will continue during the pandemic and how workers can remain safe. Here’s a brief overview of what’s happening on the ground, and how construction staff can prevent the spread of disease and avoid an unexpected consultation with an injury lawyer

The Situation in Boston

By the end of March, Boston shut down most construction projects to keep workers safe from COVID-19. At the same time, Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker has allowed construction to continue on the state level. Cambridge has allowed emergency projects to continue but has ordered most work on public and private properties to cease.

lawyerSince traffic has slowed down due to the pandemic, it’s an excellent time to get road work done. Still, it’s a challenging moment for the construction industry, as it’s not clear what’s going to happen over time. Additionally, many homeowners are canceling renovation jobs and holding off until the public health emergency is over. This makes it harder for contractors and employees to find work.

Safety for Workers

In places where construction is continuing, there are a number of mandatory protocols. For example, many sites now have areas to wash and sanitize your hands. Additionally, workers are bringing tools rather than sharing, and they’re staying six feet apart while building. Companies are also sanitizing work areas and asking employees who have symptoms to stay home.

While these protocols are technically mandatory, that doesn’t mean all workers follow them. If you work in construction, it’s essential to stick to CDC guidelines. For example, stay home if you feel sick, wear a face covering if social distancing is difficult to maintain, and wash your hands after using the restroom, touching objects that have been handled by others, and taking breaks.
