You rely on your vehicle to get you to and from work, errands, and social events. However, if you don’t consider yourself a handy person, the inner workings of the car may be mystifying. Thankfully, even with limited auto knowledge, you can protect your car and keep its various components in optimal condition. To keep the engine running smoothly, follow these guidelines when using the vehicle.

Do:

Maintain steady speeds.

Accelerating rapidly and slamming on the brakes are both bad for your car’s fuel efficiency and overall condition. Revving up your engine too much can strain the drivetrain and burn excess fuel.

Driving too fast will also require you to put more pressure on the brakes to bring the car to a stop. This can cause the brake pads and tires to wear prematurely. Instead, accelerate and decelerate gradually to protect your car’s components and extend their usage.

Let your engine warm up.

engineWhen the engine is cold, the oil will be more viscous and won’t be fully distributed throughout the mechanism. By running the car for thirty seconds before driving, you give the engine a chance to heat the oil and circulate it fully throughout the system.

This is especially important during early mornings and throughout the colder months. Wait a few minutes for the machine to warm up before heading off to work.

Don’t:

Carry excess weight.

If you have a spacious vehicle, it’s convenient to use it for all kinds of transportation. However, if you leave bikes, building materials, and strollers in your car, you could be harming its efficiency. Unload heavy items between trips to avoid putting extra strain on engine components and brakes.

Hit potholes.

Unfortunately, potholes are a common occurrence on well-used roads. Avoid them whenever possible. The change in level can shock your suspension and undercarriage.

You should also reduce your speed when going over speed bumps, as they can damage your car if you drive over them too quickly. They can even scratch the bottom of the vehicle if your suspension is particularly close to the ground.
