Tile flooring is a versatile option for your home, working well in the kitchen, bathroom, and practically any other room. You can find tile in a variety of colors, making it easy to coordinate with your home decor. Plus, it’s easy to maintain when you follow these do’s and don’ts.

Do:

Clean them weekly.

Use a broom to clean up crumbs, dirt, and debris from your tiles daily. Every week, clean them with an all-purpose, non-oil-based floor cleaner. Once you’ve finished mopping, rinse the floor with water to eliminate any cleaner buildup.

Care for the grout.

flooringIn addition to cleaning the tiles, address the grout at least once a month. Dust and debris can make the grout appear dingy. Eliminate this buildup with a simple solution of baking soda and water. Let the paste sit overnight, then rinse it with warm water to reveal brighter grout.

Don’t:

Use harsh cleaning products.

While tiles are durable, products that contain acidic elements or bleach can strip their protective coatings. Likewise, don’t scrub the tiles with steel wool or other rough materials to avoid abrading their surfaces.

Let spills sit for long.

Clean up spills as soon as you see them. The longer you let a spill sit on the tile floor, the more likely it will become a stubborn stain. Plus, wet tile floors can be slippery and dangerous to walk on.

Move furniture across your floors.

Tile floors are subject to being damaged by heavy pieces of furniture being moved across it. Scratches can damage the tile and even require professional replacement. Always carry furniture across the floor or use a dolly to relocate heavy objects to prevent damage.
