Epoxy floor coatings offer numerous benefits for garage floors. Not only are they impact-resistant and durable, but coatings cover cracks and flaws in the floor while greatly improving its appearance. If you’re considering finishing your home’s garage floor, you’ll need to plan out the home improvement project for the best results.

3 Factors to Consider When Installing a Garage Floor Coating

1. Weatherfloor-coating-ohio

Conditions must be optimal when a floor coating is installed, or the materials won’t properly bond to the floor and could require a do-over. Choose a week of dry conditions with temperatures between 60-80°F during installation and bonding. First, the floor must be cleaned and prepared for the coating, and the concrete must be at least 55°F. It will then take at least three days for the coating to be installed and to dry, which, for tri-state residents, makes summer the ideal time to finish your floor.

2. Condition of The Floor

Not all concrete surfaces are suitable for a floor coating, so a flooring contractor should test your garage floor for signs of moisture. Moisture from the ground can penetrate some concrete, and if your floor is damp, a coating can’t be applied. Most concrete floors need at least two months to dry after they are installed before epoxy floor coatings bond to the surface completely.

3. Preparation

If you have previously painted your garage floor, the paint will need to be removed before a coating can be applied. A flooring contractor should be hired to prepare the surface by degreasing, removing oil spots, and etching the garage floor before thoroughly cleaning it. A professional power floor scrubber can complete these tasks much faster than trying to do it yourself. Without this preparation, the coating won’t adhere to the garage floor.
