Gas logs offer a safe and convenient way to have a blazing fire on demand, instantly creating a relaxed mood and a cozy atmosphere. However, first, you'll have to choose what type of logs are most appropriate for your traditional or gas fireplace. Below, learn about the three most common kinds of gas log sets and how to identify the best one for your needs.

Vent-Free

Vent-free gas logs are designed with burners that burn the gas cleanly with no exhaust. You use these logs in gas fireplaces approved for vent-free sets and typically burn them with the damper closed because of the exhaustless design of the logs. Since there are no vents through which heat can escape, vent-free logs deliver more warmth to the room.

Ventless logs can consume less gas than other types of logs, and they burn a bit cleaner, making them an eco-friendly choice. However, some logs may potentially emit a kerosene-like smell.

Vented

While some heat is naturally lost with the escape of exhaust, vented logs provide a more realistic-looking fire, with yellow and orange flames that burn bright and tall. The open exhaust also minimizes any unpleasant smells associated with the fire. Unlike vent-free logs, vented logs produce soot, so the fireplace will require routine cleanings.

Direct Vent

Direct vent gas fireplaces are prefabricated devices that use a sealed combustion system to produce fire. They draw in outdoor air for combustion and emit waste gases outdoors. A direct vent fireplace is a large design feature that tends to be one of the main focal points of a room. Propane or natural gas is typically used and these gas fireplaces have adjustable heat levels.
