Tooth extractions are common and relieve pain, remove decayed or problematic teeth, and improve the overall health of the mouth and gums. Both before and after the extraction, it's important to follow proper pre- and post-care guidelines so your mouth can heal without issue. Below, learn some common aspects of both the pre- and post-care processes.

Before

If you are going to be sedated for the tooth extraction, you may not be able to eat for up to 12 hours before the procedure. If you are only receiving a local anesthetic, such as Novocain, eat only a light meal beforehand to reduce the chances of nausea. See if your dentist is going to prescribe any post-extraction medications, like pain relievers or antibiotics, and make sure they are safe to take with any medications you currently take. Ask your dentist if you should continue taking regularly prescribed meds as usual before the extraction.

It's not uncommon to feel a little lightheaded after a dental procedure, so you may want to arrange for someone to drive you home afterward. This will likely be a requirement if sedation is administered for the extraction. The first couple of days after the treatment, your mouth may be a bit sore, so shopping for softer foods and planning lighter, blander meals is always a good idea.

After

tooth extractionAim to take it easy following the procedure. When lying down, keep your head propped with a pillow. Apply an icepack to the side of your face where the tooth was extracted, 30 minutes on and 10 minutes off, for up to 24 hours post-procedure. Then, use a heating pad or warm compress on the area. This will minimize swelling, bruising, and pain.

Avoid drinking through straws, as the sucking motion can cause the stitches to break or the wound to open. Don't brush or chew on the extraction site until it has fully healed. Take all medications as prescribed by your dentist. If you have shortness of breath, chest pain, vomiting, or fever, contact a medical professional as soon as possible.
