It’s difficult to determine the value of comic books. While some are only worth the initial purchasing price, others are considered rare collector’s items that people will pay large sums of money to own. When trying to figure out what your collection is worth, it’s helpful to understand what determines a comic’s value.

What Makes a Comic Book Valuable?

1. Popular Characters

Issues that contain the most popular characters are always in higher demand than the lesser-known heroes. Characters like Batman, Spider-Man, and Superman are the ones people are most familiar with, and the emotional attachment increases their value. The comic will net an even higher return when it’s a popular character’s first appearance in the series.

2. Grade

Comic BooksComic books are separated into eight different grades when determining their value as a collectible. The higher the grade, the more expensive the comic becomes.

In descending order, the grades are mint, near mint, very fine, fine, very good, good, fair, and poor. Factors like bent pages, water marks, or obvious tears diminish a comic’s grade.

3. Age

As with many collectibles, a book’s age plays a major role in determining its overall price. Most often, the older it is, the more collectors are willing to pay for it. Currently, some of the most valuable ones were published during the Golden Age (1938-1954) or the Silver Age (1956-1971). The publishing date can be found on the comic’s cover page.

4. Issue Number

Comics are released as single issues that make up a larger story arc, also called a volume. Issue number one is the first part of the larger story, and people tend to pay more money for the lower-numbered issues. If a new character is first introduced in a later issue, it can increase the value. In general, however, the lower the issue, the more expensive it is.

5. Autographs

While an autograph from the artist or story creator does diminish the grade slightly, it typically makes up for it by providing extra value. However, the signature needs to be certified to bolster the price.

The signature can be verified by accredited organizations, and if it’s deemed authentic, you’ll be supplied with a certificate of authenticity that needs to be provided to the buyer along with the comic.
