Installing a water well will provide an adequate supply of fresh water while protecting your health and the environment. However, finding the right spot for drilling one in can be challenging, especially since there are so many factors to consider. Here are a few do’s and don’ts to keep in mind as you pick a location.

Do:

Consider the groundwater flow direction.

If you can determine the flow direction, put the well higher than the latrine so that contaminants move away, protecting your supply and health. The flow often goes in the same direction that the ground slopes, so it’s best to place the well uphill from the latrine.

Find a location with nothing overhead.

drillingTo drill and fix your water well if it breaks later on, the installation company will use tall equipment, including cranes. As a result, you want to find a drilling location with no power lines, trees, or other tall objects overhead. This will make it easier for the well company to work efficiently and get the job done right.

Don’t:

Place the well near a septic tank.

When excrement enters the leach field, it can travel around 100 underground. This is dangerous because bacteria, viruses, and infections can spread if wastewater finds its way into your water supply, leading to serious health concerns. As a result, don’t drill within 100 feet of the leach field and septic tank.

Drill around rock outcroppings.

If you notice surface rock, such as buried boulders, there’s likely subterraneous rock, too. Smaller rocks won’t be problematic, but larger ones can slow down the drilling process, wasting time and increasing the cost of the installation.
