Most likely, you already brush your teeth at least twice a day. However, you might not be getting the most from your brushing sessions if you aren’t using the right techniques. To make sure your dentist can say “No cavities!” and you maintain a bright, healthy smile, keep these tips in mind.

The Right Way to Brush Your Teeth

1. Choose the Right Brush

Choose a toothbrush with soft bristles that’s properly sized for your mouth. A brush head that’s too large won’t get your back teeth properly clean if you have a smaller mouth.

Soft bristles are a must, as they are flexible and can easily clean along the gum line, whereas hard bristles can damage the surface of your teeth. Don’t forget to replace your toothbrush every three months, as well.

2. Brush for Two Minutes

Dentists recommend brushing for at least two minutes twice a day to properly clean your teeth. Set a timer on your phone so you don't underestimate the time.

At least one of your brushing sessions should be a thorough cleaning as well—brushing for two minutes, flossing, and using mouthwash to kill any remaining bacteria.

3. Use the Right Technique

dentistThe correct way to brush your teeth is to use a gentle, circular massage motion, starting at your gum line and moving down. Scrubbing your teeth from right to left won’t remove all of the bacteria and can damage the tooth enamel.

If you aren’t sure the technique is correct, ask your dentist or dental hygienist to demonstrate. If you tend to brush too hard, consider investing in an electric toothbrush that will indicate when you’re using too much pressure.

4. Don’t Forget Your Tongue

Bacteria don’t only live on your teeth; they can build up on your tongue and the inside of your cheeks as well, causing bad breath and contributing to tooth decay.

Whenever you brush your teeth, gently brush your tongue and cheeks as well to eliminate bacteria. Consider using a tongue scraper to remove any bacteria and germs and help keep your tongue healthy.
