Every living thing requires water to survive. Unfortunately, many people don’t get adequate hydration, especially during the hot summer months. If you are a caregiver for an older adult, it is crucial to know the dehydration signs to prevent severe illness. In addition to extreme thirst or infrequent urination, there are four other lesser-known signs of dehydration.

5 Signs of Dehydration Caregivers Should Know

1. Bad Breath

Most people think of “morning breath” as a regular part of waking up. But it is actually a sign of dehydration. Drinking water stimulates saliva production. The role of saliva is to cleanse the mouth of particles and bacteria that can cause bad breath. If you are dehydrated, your mouth may not produce adequate saliva, resulting in bacterial imbalance.

2. Headaches

Research indicates dehydration can cause headaches and trigger migraines. Though the exact cause is unknown, it is well-documented that drinking more water can reduce symptoms in people with frequent problems. Usually, head pain caused by dehydration feels similar to a tension headache.

3. Fever & Chills

caregiverHeat illness, or heat stroke, is a severe and potentially life-threatening condition. Symptoms include fever, chills, and sweating, as well as diarrhea and vomiting. When untreated, heatstroke can be fatal.

It’s crucial to hydrate and cool the body with cold water or ice packs. If an adult’s temperature is 103 F or higher, seek medical attention immediately.

4. Dry or Flushed Skin

Skin is the body’s largest organ and requires hydration to stay supple. Although you may sweat profusely on a hot day, one of the signs of dehydration is dry skin. The skin may also be flaky or flushed.

5. Dizziness, Confusion, & Irritability

The neurological system needs water to circulate blood and transmit messages from the brain to the body. When a person is dehydrated, it can have significant cognitive effects. Research has found dehydration can cause irritability and other mood changes, confusion, delayed reaction, increased pain sensitivity, and dizziness.
