Termite infestations can pose several potential risks to homeowners. Aside from structural damage to the wooden parts of your home, dust from their nests can also trigger allergic reactions and other respiratory issues. Moreover, termites can also sting or bite, which can leave a swollen, painful wound. Here are three termite control tips to keep these insects from building a colony in your home.

3 Termite Control Strategies to Implement

1. Use Support Beams

Some termites are subterranean and build their colonies within the soil. However, they still feed on cellulose found in wood. So, if your home has wood structures such as a deck or foundation that comes in direct contact with the ground, they are susceptible to termite damage. To protect your deck and foundation, build them with steel support beams since it is resistant to termites. Wood doors, sidings, or latticework should also be a few inches above the ground to prevent termite damage. You can also use termiticide to treat the wood so that it won’t attract colonies.

2. Keep Foundation Dry

termite controlTermites thrive in moist conditions and are more likely to infest your home if the soil around it is always damp. As such, make sure that water doesn’t pool around the foundation. Fix any drips or moisture issues with your plumbing. Check that your air conditioner drip lines are not saturating the soil next to your home with water. Your gutters and downspouts should also work correctly, diverting water away from your foundation.

3. Seal Gaps

Exclusion is another termite control technique that will keep the insects from entering your home in the first place. Inspect your foundation for small crevices or cracks that the termites can use to access your home. Seal these areas with paint to keep out termites and moisture. Also, consider installing screens over vents in the attic and the foundation as another means of protection.
