The radiator prevents your car from overheating because it keeps cooled antifreeze circulating throughout the engine. Like any other vehicle part, this essential component needs periodic auto maintenance to ensure it can do its job efficiently. Here are a few signs it’s time to bring your car in for a radiator check.

How to Know If Your Radiator Is Failing

1. Overheating Engine

The radiator may be failing if the temperature gauge’s needle climbs despite having a full coolant reservoir. A faulty thermostat can’t circulate coolant to the engine and bring used fluid to the radiator to be cooled. This issue will make the engine’s moving parts to overheat with friction, causing your car to break down and emit steam from under the hood.

2. Coolant Leaks

You may have an antifreeze leak if there’s a red, yellow, or green puddle under the car. Leaks can result from a hole in the radiator or brittle hose attachments. These issues indicate that the engine isn’t getting enough fluid to cool its moving parts, leading to an overheated car.

3. Sludge in the Radiator

The coolant in the reservoir should look yellow, green, or red. If the fluid appears rusty, there may be sludge buildup in the radiator. Sludge is the result of radiator corrosion, which is caused by old, degrading antifreeze. The metal corrosion will add rust particles to the fluid, which will accumulate in the lines and make it challenging for the coolant to circulate and function properly.
