An internal combustion engine uses heat from burning fuel to provide torque to the wheels, making the automobile move. Auto mechanics perform maintenance to keep the system in top shape. Without the right care, the engine may face issues. Here are a handful of reasons why these malfunctions occur.

Why Do Car Engines Experience Problems?

1. Overheating

When fuel combusts in the engine, it generates heat. Coolant circulates throughout the system to keep temperatures low. If the liquid runs out, the uncontrolled heat may cause the mechanical components to seize or weld together.

Flush the coolant every three years or 30,000 miles, whichever comes first. Add more coolant when the level dips over an inch below the full mark.

2. Lack of Oil Changes

auto mechanicMotor oil lubricates the engine’s crankshaft, bearings, rods, and pistols, allowing them to move without sticking or grinding together. Over time, oil becomes grimy and needs to be changed.

To avoid harmful sediment buildup, have the engine oil changed approximately every three months or 3,000 miles. An auto mechanic should replace the oil a total of about three to four times a year.

3. Oil Leaks

Engine oil can leak when the rubber mounts, suspension bearings, or steering parts deteriorate. As mentioned above, the oil keeps the system properly lubricated, preventing excessive wear.

If you notice black or brown spots on the concrete beneath your vehicle, the engine oil may be leaking. Visit an auto mechanic for a professional inspection as soon as you suspect leaks.

4. Old Spark Plugs

Spark plugs ignite the fuel inside the engine. Old plugs often send weak sparks, preventing the system from turning over and causing misfires.

Spark plugs should be replaced every 30,000 to 50,000 miles. Not only does replacement prevent engine damage, but it also improves fuel economy.
