Hearing aids allow wearers to hear clearly and engage with the sounds around them. These devices use small batteries to operate that typically need to be replaced every three to 10 days. Luckily, there are ways you can extend the life of the batteries. Here are several helpful tips to keep in mind to get the most out of each unit.

5 Tips for Prolonging Hearing Aid Battery Life

1. Pause Before Insertion

Let the battery sit for approximately five minutes after removing the protective tab and before inserting it into your hearing aid. This brief pause allows the zinc in the battery to make contact with the air. The reaction of zinc and air can boost the battery’s output, giving it an additional three days of use.

2. Keep Away From Extreme Temperatures

Cold or humid temperatures can affect the zinc content in the battery, shortening its lifespan. Frost, condensation, and other types of moisture can also cause corrosion to seep into the battery, reducing its power. Always store your batteries at room temperature in a dry space, such as a nightstand or dresser top.

3. Don’t Remove the Tab Until Use

4. Wash Hands Before Handling

Always wash and dry your hands before handling hearing aid batteries. Any traces of dirt, grease, or moisture can transfer to the battery and cause corrosion, which will damage the battery and could spread to the hearing aid’s components.

5. Turn the Aid Off

If you’re not using your hearing aid, be sure to turn it off and store it at room temperature in a safe space. Leave the battery door open to allow any moisture to escape. This helps minimize excessive battery drain and reduces the risk of corrosion.
