Shuffleboard is a great recreational game because of how accessible it is to players of any skill level. However, if you want to have a better chance of winning, it’s helpful to understand these advanced techniques that’ll give you a competitive advantage over even the most seasoned players.

What Are Some Advanced Shuffleboard Techniques?

1. The Perfect Grip

Gripping the puck too tightly limits the control and finesse you’ll have when playing, leading to more errant shots. Instead, hold it softly using your thumb and middle fingers around the edge, with the index finger resting gently on the top. Use the remaining two fingers for guidance and aim.

2. Side-Wheeling Shots

ShuffleboardNovice players tend to play their shots from the middle of the board, but more advanced ones utilize the side-wheeling technique to create more favorable angles. Start with the puck lined up on the edge of either side of the table. From there, you can slide it straight down the table using the rail as a guide or cross the puck across the table to avoid the others that are already in the field of play.

3. Knock-Off Technique

If an opposing player lands a great shot, you have the option of taking their points away using a knock-off shot. Rather than aiming your puck at an opening on the table, direct your shot at their puck.

This allows you to knock their puck off of the board and remove those points from the opponent’s total. You can even combine this with a stick shot, which is where you knock their puck off, but yours sticks in place, so you take their points away while bolstering your own total.

4. English Backspin

This advanced shooting technique allows you to place the puck in areas of the table that would otherwise be inaccessible. Using your thumb and middle finger, spin the puck as you slide it in either a clockwise or counterclockwise direction. This causes the puck to curve around obstacles such as opposing pucks to stop at the perfect spot on the table.

5. Defensive Strategies

Sometimes the best offense is a good defense. If you’ve landed your puck in a great location on the table, you can play defensive shots to prevent your opponent from knocking it off.

Gently slide your next puck or two in front of and around the other well-placed pucks. Keep some distance between the defensive puck and the scoring one so that both can’t be knocked off during the opponent’s turn.
