Your furnace will usually give you some warning signs when something is wrong with the internal or external components. One of the most common and obvious signs that you may need furnace repair is an unusual odor when you turn it on. This issue may be relatively easy to fix but could become a dangerous problem if left unchecked. Below, determine what’s wrong with your system and how you should act based on the type of smell.

3 Common Furnace Odors

1. Rotten Eggs

If an odor of rotten eggs or sulfur is added to the gas scent, which is naturally odorless, you will notice when there is a gas leak. If you smell this scent, either when the furnace is on or off, it may mean that you have a leak. Fuel is highly combustible and can be extremely dangerous to your health if you breathe in too much of it. If this occurs, immediately turn the heat and any other appliances off, leave the home, and call your gas company.

2. Metal

Common causes include a fan motor burning out, wiring that is getting dangerously hot, or two moving metal parts rubbing up against each other. If left to continue working, the underlying issue could spark a fire or cause more severe and costly damage inside your system.

3. Dust

The smell of dust is one of the most common odors in a furnace system, and it is to be expected when you turn on the heat for the first time of the season. The dust has built up inside the vents and the unit during the off-season, so the smell is that debris burning away. However, if the odor doesn’t fade after the first few uses of the season, check that your air filter is clean. If the filter isn’t the issue, it may be time to have your vents cleaned or your home tested for mold. Excess dust and mold in your system can lead to aggravated allergies and other respiratory issues.
