Similar to house deeds, car titles are documents that authenticate the ownership of a vehicle. However, there are numerous types of auto titles, and the type you have may be affected by the characteristics or history of your car. Use the following guide to learn more about a few of the many types of car titles.

4 Types of Car Titles

1. Certificate of Origin

When a car dealership buys vehicles from their manufacturer, the manufacturer ships them to the dealer with this title. This title is then passed onto the car’s initial buyer, who is the first to own the car.

2. Reconstructed Title

If a car has been damaged, either through a collision or due to gradual wear and tear, it may be reconstructed by a mechanic or body shop. Once it’s approved for road use by an inspector, it can be sold or given back to its existing owner with this title.

3. Salvage Title

4. Import Title

Foreign cars that are manufactured outside the United States are given this title when imported into the country. This is mandatory for them to pass customs. In order to receive an import title, the vehicle must have been designed for use in the U.S., so it meets the nation’s dimensional, environmental, and safety-related standards.
