Many dogs love to swim, but some lakes, rivers, and ponds contain harmful parasites, wildlife, or water conditions that can be dangerous. Speak to your veterinarian about the safety of the bodies of water in your area, but in the meantime, consider the following tips to keep your dog safe this summer.

How to Keep Your Dog Safe While Swimming

1. Get Them a Life Jacket

While some dogs are adept swimmers, others might struggle to keep their heads above water. Additionally, even the strongest swimmers can get exhausted regardless of their breed. Ensure your pet's safety by supplying a well-fitted life jacket, especially if they're accompanying you on a boat or on a dock where the water is deeper.

2. Avoid Blue-Green Algae

veterinarianDogs love to splash in ponds and lakes, but toxic blue-green algae, also known as cyanobacteria, can be deadly to animals. While the harmful bacteria are invisible to the naked eye, they often give the appearance of algae when clumped together in ponds or lakes. Avoid swimming if you spot anything like this.

Cyanobacteria are typically found in non-flowing freshwater when the temperatures rise and there's little rainfall. The most common ways dogs are exposed include licking the bacteria off their fur or paws, chewing on an infected toy, or drinking contaminated water. If you suspect your dog has been exposed to blue-green algae, visit your veterinarian immediately.

3. Steer Clear of Fishing Gear

While you might enjoy spending the day fishing beside your furry friend, your naturally inquisitive dog might find the smell of your fishing bait or your first catch of the day too enticing to pass up. Fishing equipment such as hooks and barbs can easily get stuck in your dog's paws, snout, or mouth.

Loose fishing lines can also become twined around their paws, which is especially dangerous if the hook is still attached. Prevent this by keeping your tackle box closed and all equipment out of reach. Be particularly vigilant about errant hooks and gear when visiting an area frequented by fishermen with your dog in tow.
