If you undergo hearing testing, the results will be presented in the form of a chart. Called an audiogram, this chart demonstrates the patient’s ability to hear sounds across varying frequencies. To interpret your results with ease—and determine how you may want to proceed—here’s what you should know about audiograms.

How Do Audiograms Chart Hearing Ability?

Every audiogram contains a graph with two axes. The horizontal axis represents frequencies ranging from 250 Hertz to 8000 Hz. The vertical one, on the other hand, represents decibels, which range from -10 dB—the softest sound that someone without hearing loss can detect—to 120 dB. Normal conversation occurs at around 60 dB, while a thumping rock concert measures roughly 120 dB.

What Kind of Range Is Considered Normal?

If you pick up all frequencies in the -10 dB to 25 dB range during the hearing testing, your ability is considered normal. Should this be the case, all your points will be concentrated near the top of the audiogram.

Someone with points lower on the chart has hearing loss. If your markers are concentrated between 25 dB and 40 dB, for example, you have mild hearing loss. Those whose points fall lower than 90 dB, on the other hand, have profound hearing loss.
