A leaky faucet may seem like a small problem, but it has the potential to result in expensive repairs. A leak can waste several gallons of water every day, depending on its size. In addition to having a plumber fix it, you should be aware of the following sources of dripping so that you can prevent future problems.

Why Is Your Faucet Dripping?

1. Worn Out O-Rings

O-rings are rubber rings that encircle the valve stem in your faucet. Over time, they can get worn down by regular use of the sink.

When the O-ring gets loosened or damaged enough, you’ll notice water leaking from the spout base or from under the handle. A plumber can examine the O-ring and valve to ensure a replacement is all that is needed.

2. Broken Washers

plumbersIf the faucet drips after being shut off, it could be due to a malfunctioning seat washer. The valve seat and the washer next to it rub against each other when you use the faucet.

Eventually, this friction can wear down the washer, leading to a weaker seal. This occurs in both older and newer faucets, with the plastic seats in newer versions subject to wear as well.

3. Bad Valve Seats

The valve seat is the connection between the faucet and the spout. If the water leak is coming from the spout itself, it could mean the seat is corroded.

Sediment in the water can cause this over time, but a plumber can help you maintain your faucets to avoid this problem. If the seat is already damaged, a professional replacement is recommended.
