A hurricane is stressful for anyone, but it can be particularly upsetting for pets and the people who care for them. Fortunately, there are measures pet owners and veterinarians can take to help animals cope with the experience. It begins with staying aware of local weather patterns, particularly during storm warnings. Here are three other ways you can keep your pet safe and comfortable during hurricane season.

Pet Safety During a Hurricane

1. Be Disaster-Prepared

Preparing for emergencies is an excellent idea in general, but it can also be critical for your pet’s well-being. When preparing, be sure to stow at least a three day supply of food and water for your pets. Other vital items include medical records, registration and vaccination documents, and medical aid supplies.

Consider also stashing pet carriers and leashes for when you’re on the move. Take sanitary supplies like litter, newspapers, and bleach into account. Lastly, remember to have familiar toys and treats available to help your pets with stress.

2. Address Anxiety

Before and during a hurricane, it’s common for the situation to get emotional. Try to stay calm, as your pet can sense your stress and might panic. Maintain a stable temperament and remember to secure your doors and windows in case something scares them into trying to escape.

Give them time to calm down and have veterinarian-recommended calming elements like toys, bones, or bedding. Your veterinarian can even provide calming medication for pets with extreme fear and anxiety.

3. Microchip Beforehand

Although you might already have collars or ID tags for your pet, a microchip offers a more permanent identification method. It’s also one you can’t misplace, which could happen with collars and physical tags. Be sure to keep your contact information up to date, both on the tags and on the microchip database.
