To reduce the spread of COVID-19, most people are following the safety guidelines of wearing masks and social distancing. On the other hand, many want to live normally and enjoy parties and gatherings. Fortunately, it’s possible to do so safely. Whether you get takeout or catering, here’s how to order food from your favorite restaurant while staying safe.
When Picking Up the Food
When getting your catering or takeout, wear a mask from the moment you step out the door. Maintain six feet between you and others who are also picking up food. Follow the instructions of the restaurant, whether it’s to wait behind a certain line or a plastic barrier.
While the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has said the risk of contaminated food packaging is low, it’s safest to transfer your food to your own containers or plates at home. Then dispose of the restaurant containers, clean the counter, and wash your hands thoroughly for 20 seconds before you eat.
When Gathered at Home
If you have a baby shower, graduation, birthday party, or some other occasion you’re celebrating, do so safely. Keep the guest list small—10 people or fewer—and host the party outside in a backyard or at a local park to allow for ventilation and social distancing.
Pack a few spare face masks for anyone who forgot them, and have bottles of hand sanitizer available. If you ordered catering, have your guests form a socially distanced line as they get their food. Have one or two people in charge of serving to minimize the risk of spreading the virus.
