Concrete is an ideal building material to use for outdoor stairs on your property thanks to its attractive look, durability, and easy maintenance. However, over time, foot traffic and harsh weather will cause cracks, chips, and stains on the material. When this happens, your steps need to be repaired to keep you and your guests safe. Learn more about a few key steps in this process below.

How to Repair Concrete Steps

1. Prepare the Area

Ensure the damaged area is clear of debris so that there is a relatively smooth and solid surface for the new materials to bond to. Sweep the area, removing dirt, crumbling or chipped material, and weeds. Additionally, scrub the area with a stiff brush.

If you have a pressure washer, use it to remove any loose bits of debris. Tape off any areas that are not being repaired.

2. Use the Right Tools

How you apply the concrete will vary depending on the type of damage you’re repairing. As such, it may help to have a range of trowels on hand. For superficial damage like small cracks, use a mason’s trowel to apply a thin layer of concrete. To create a line at a step’s edge, use a nose trowel.

concreteFor larger jobs, you might need to build a wooden frame to ensure the steps retain their shape. For structural damage, pack concrete into the damaged area with a square head shovel. Then, smooth the surface with a trowel.

3. Finish & Seal

If your steps require more than one coat of concrete, apply the second one while the first coat is still wet for easy bonding.

Use a finishing brush to create a textured surface that prevents stairs from becoming slippery in wet weather. Let the material sit (making sure it remains moist) for anywhere from 24-48 hours, then spray the steps with a sealant to protect the new material against the elements.
