When it’s time for your yearly tuneup, there are several car parts that a mechanic will inspect. Depending on the condition of these components, some of them may need to be replaced. Here are a few common parts that are frequently addressed during the process.

What Parts Are Often Replaced During a Tuneup?

1. Engine Air Filter

car partsThe engine air filter is responsible for keeping dust, dirt, and debris from gumming up your car’s parts. A used up filter can affect power output and cause damage to the engine. To keep your car operating smoothly, the filter will be replaced if it’s caked with dirt or so coated with dust that light can’t pass through.

2. Spark Plugs

A mechanic will also clean and inspect the spark plugs during annual tuneups. Not only can this tell you a lot about how well the engine is running, but it also keeps the ignition system functional.

Worn spark plugs can begin to misfire, causing a range of problems, from poor gas mileage to issues with acceleration. Without replacements, the engine might fail to start.

3. Brake Pads

Most brake pads are visible through the spokes of the car wheel and should be at least ¼ inch thick. Pay attention to the noises your brakes make as you drive.

Squeaking, squealing, and other unusual sounds can signify that your pads have worn down and need to be replaced. If your car is making these noises, you’ll need to bring it to a shop before the annual tuneup, as leaving the issue alone for too long could result in brake failure.
