If you’re thinking of correcting your smile, the dentist may have discussed Invisalign as an option. This method is meant to straighten crooked teeth as unobtrusively as possible. Here’s what to know about determining if this is the right method.

Who Should Consider Invisalign?

Patients With Mild Teeth Repositioning Needs

If you have crooked teeth, a mild overbite or underbite, gaps in the teeth, tooth overlaps, or protruding teeth, you will benefit from Invisalign.

The dentist will create customized aligners that apply pressure to move the teeth into place. You’ll wear them in a series—with each set creating a minor difference to your smile—until it is perfect.

The trays will be worn for approximately 22 hours a day and switched out every two weeks or so. Your dentist may ask to evaluate the progress every six weeks. Results are typically achieved within 6-18 months.

Patients Who Desire Inconspicuous Dental Help

Invisalign blends in with the teeth and is barely noticeable. Slide them out when you eat, drink, or brush your teeth to keep food from getting stuck. To clean them, remove the trays to brush and rinse them with lukewarm water.

They also don’t cause irritation in the mouth. The smooth, BPA-free plastic won’t cause scratches.

Who Shouldn’t Consider Invisalign?

Young Patients

Kids should either consider metal braces or wait until their older teens for their jaws to stop growing. Also, Invisalign treatment takes more dedication than permanent braces. Younger patients may not remember to wear the invisible aligners for the specified 22 hours a day, rendering the treatment ineffective.

Patients With Severe Oral Conditions

Certain dental issues require more in-depth treatment before considering Invisalign. Extreme underbites and overbites may need surgery to shift the jaw bone into place. If you have gum disease or cavities, a dentist should correct these issues before proceeding with the Invisalign treatment.
