Of all the plumbing issues the average homeowner will face, a leaky faucet may be the most common. While it may not seem like a big deal at first, a continuous leak will waste water and increase the risk of mold growth and water damage. Understanding the type of leak you’re dealing with and what needs to be done to fix it will help you get quick repair results.

Spout

Spout leaks are the easiest issue to spot—the faucet will drip even when you’ve turned the water off. While the drips may be intermittent at first, these leaks have a tendency to get worse over time, leading to a constant drip that wastes water and stains the sink. This type most often requires that you replace the cartridge inside the faucet.

Under the Sink

leaky faucetLeaks that occur under the sink tend to be the hardest to spot simply because most people don’t look down there very often. Left unchecked, these leaks are the most likely to cause mold and mildew growth. They can also cause severe damage to the cabinet or vanity and the surrounding floor.

Check for water marks under the pipes by laying a paper towel in the area and checking for drips. Most often, these leaks are the result of loose P-trap or water supply connections.

Base

Sometimes, leaks will occur where the sink and faucet body meet. These only occur while the water is running and are easy to overlook because of water that splashes up in the area while in use. Dry the area around the sink before turning it on to see if any water seeps out. Replacing the O-ring or valve cartridge should take care of the problem.
