Pediatricians recommend children have their first eye exam before they begin school, followed by annual checkups. Making sure that your child’s eyes are healthy, and correcting any vision problems early, can help support their development. However, the first visit to the eye doctor may cause anxiety. Prepare your child ahead of time to ease their fears and make the appointment a pleasant experience.

How to Get Your Child Ready for the Eye Doctor

1. Explain Why You’re Going

When children hear that they have an eye doctor appointment, they may be afraid the exam will hurt or fear it automatically means they need glasses. Calm any concerns by explaining that the visit is only to make sure their eyes are healthy and answer any questions they have about what to expect.

Most first appointments involve looking at letters and pictures and answering questions. At most, the eye doctor might put some drops in their eyes. If you can, read some stories or watch videos about what happens during an eye doctor appointment to help your child understand.

2. Talk About Tests

Demonstrate how the doctor will have them cover one eye at a time to look at different objects. Let them know that the doctor may shine a light in their eyes, as well. If your child is especially nervous, consider doing some practice tests at home.

3. Schedule the Appointment at the Right Time

Whenever possible, schedule the appointment for a time of day when your child is at their best. Interrupting nap time, or planning the visit after a long day at preschool, can lead to a grumpy and uncooperative patient.

Plan the visit for a time when your child is well-rested and less likely to be overwhelmed. Bring a snack or a favorite book or toy to keep them occupied while you wait and keep them calm and in good spirits when you see the doctor.
