Your car’s engine generates a lot of heat, so a special fluid is used to lubricate the transmission’s moving parts to prevent friction and overheating. Most vehicles can go 30,000 to 50,000 miles before transmission service is needed to replace this fluid. However, problems can arise before this maintenance window. Here are a few signs that indicate it’s time for a flush.

When Should I Schedule a Transmission Fluid Flush?

1. Grinding Sounds

If you have an automatic transmission, grinding noises aren’t normal. While this sound usually indicates low fluid levels, it can also signal that the liquid is contaminated with dirt, grease, and sludge. Fortunately, it’s easy to check if this is the case.

Run the engine, put the car in park, and then remove the transmission fluid dipstick—this is likely located near the rear of the engine or sticking out of the transaxle. Under normal conditions, the fluid should be red and clear. If it’s brown, black, or sludgy-looking or if it smells burned, it’s time to replace it.

2. Gear Issues

You may also notice that the car slips out of the correct gear, which will cause the engine to make a whining sound if it suddenly becomes underpowered for the current speed.

3. Delayed Movement

If the transmission fluid is clogged with dirt, you’ll have difficulty moving from a parked position. This is because the components can’t transition smoothly from one gear to another with dirty fluid. If you start moving only to feel the car jerk or jump in retaliation, you should have a transmission service professional fix the issue by draining and replacing the liquid.
