As your team practices on the volleyball court, it's important that you take some precautions. Though it's a relatively low-injury sport, staying safe should always be a priority. For happier and healthier players, practice these tips to avoid injury.

Safety Tips on the Volleyball Court

1. Wear the Right Gear

As is the case for all sports, the right apparel will protect volleyball players. Knee pads will cover their knees every time they hit the floor, and padded shorts can also help cushion their hip bones when they dive. Your players should also have specialized shoes with padding and rubber soles that'll grip the volleyball court, and they should wear mouthguards as well.

2. Teach Communication

volleyball courtMany injuries occur when teammates fail to communicate and collide with each other. Teach your players to call the ball before they dive or jump forward for it. As they practice, they'll learn to recognize each others' calls and trust their teammates to stay out of their way once they call the ball.

3. Keep the Court Clear

Objects on the court can make players slip or otherwise injure themselves. Before beginning practice, check that there are no sharp objects or debris on the ground. If you have multiple courts playing simultaneously, the players should call any balls that roll onto other courts so no one trips.
