Considering the impact that pregnancy has on virtually every other part of your body, it probably comes as no surprise that it can affect your oral health, too. While you will undoubtedly prioritize OB-GYN appointments over the course of your pregnancy, don’t forget to visit your family dentist, as well. It’s perfectly safe—and indeed advised—to undergo dental cleanings and exams while pregnant. In between appointments, follow these tips for optimal oral health.

3 Dental Care Tips When You’re Expecting

1. Mitigate Damage From Morning Sickness

Morning sickness is a perfectly normal part of pregnancy, but, in severe cases, the stomach acid can contribute to tooth erosion. To protect your teeth during your first trimester and beyond, use a homemade mouthwash composed of baking soda and water after every bout of morning sickness. Whereas brushing right away could damage the already compromised enamel, baking soda will serve to neutralize the acid from your stomach. You can then follow with brushing to freshen your breath, but do so gently.

2. Practice Good Oral Hygiene

Since pregnancy hormones can contribute to temporary gingivitis, though, try to brush after every meal, and limit your snacking in between. Also, if any issues do arise, don’t put off seeing your family dentist. It’s perfectly safe to undergo dental x-rays during pregnancy should you need them.

3. Monitor “Pregnancy Tumors”

Although their name is alarming, pregnancy tumors aren’t usually a cause for concern. Characterized by excessive growth of the gum tissue, these “tumors” typically appear during the second trimester and then disappear on their own shortly after labor and delivery. If you develop any that are preventing you from brushing and flossing adequately because they bleed easily, ask your dentist about removing them.
