For many people, concerns about the coronavirus (COVID-19) extend to every member of their family, including their pet dogs. The current coronavirus appears to have mild to severe effects on humans, but some animals have tested positive for the virus that causes COVID-19. To learn more about whether or not your dog is susceptible to the disease and which pet care tips can keep them safe, consult the helpful guide below.

Can Dogs Contract COVID-19?

While dogs can contract canine coronavirus disease (CCoV), they are not considered susceptible to COVID-19, a new type of coronavirus that affects the respiratory system. Unlike the new coronavirus, CCoV is a contagious intestinal infection that is specific to dogs. However, some dogs can test positive for the current viral strain, even though it is not considered a health threat for pets.

Currently, there is a small group of pets that have tested positive for the disease, within homes of people who were confirmed to have COVID-19, but these animals did not show any symptoms of having the disease. According to the World Health Organization, there isn’t any evidence that concludes pets can transmit COVID-19 to their owners or other people. Though scientists are still learning about the new coronavirus and how it links animals to humans, they believe the risk of animal-to-human infection is low.

How Can You Keep Your Dog Safe During the Pandemic?

pet careBecause of the pandemic, you may need to alter your pet care routine to maintain the health and safety of your dog. Thorough handwashing with soap and water before and after handling your dog is necessary since COVID-19 spreads through droplets from the nose or mouth of an infected person, so you’ll need to keep your hands clean in case you touch a contaminated surface. If you test positive for the disease or have been exposed to someone who has, you may want to consider letting another relative or friend care for your pet until you’re better. If you must look after your dog while you are sick, be sure to wear a cloth face covering to reduce the spread of droplets.
