Over time, driving might be so automatic that you forget the basic rules of the road. However, driving carefully and correctly can help you avoid accidents and the costs involved in collision repair. Here’s some advice to help you stay safe while behind the wheel.

Do:

Drive defensively.

Defensive driving helps prevent accidents and the need for collision repairs. It involves always being aware of what other drivers are doing and expecting the unexpected.

Don’t assume that a car will turn just because they have their signal on, and figure how to move out of the way if a car in a parking lot pulls out in front of you. Learning the principles of defensive driving can keep you and your family safe.

Wear your seatbelt.

collision repairAlways make sure your seatbelt is on, whether you’re a driver or a passenger. In 2017, seatbelts saved an estimated 14,955 lives, and they could have saved 2,549 more.

If you have a small child, make sure they’re in the proper car seat for their size and that they’re always buckled in. If children are uncomfortable being in a seatbelt for a long period, take breaks during lengthy drives to let them play.

Don’t:

Drive distracted.

Distracted driving is becoming more and more common, especially with people constantly checking their smartphones. Always pay full attention to the road in front of you while driving.

Don’t talk on the phone, text, or even pull up a map to check directions. Avoid other distractions, too, like changing the air conditioning settings, messing with your music, putting on makeup, or eating. If you need to do any of these tasks, pull over.

Follow other cars too closely.

If you tailgate other cars, it makes it much harder to avoid hitting them if you have to stop short. In most situations, maintain at least three seconds of following distance between you and the car in front of you.

Determine the following distance by watching when the car in front passes a still object like a sign or overpass, then count the seconds. Give yourself more time to stop when weather conditions are poor.
