Chances are, you’re familiar with the sounds that your washing machine makes during normal operation. In fact, it’s probably not until the machine makes a strange noise that you even give the sounds of a typical cycle much thought. However, if your machine is especially loud all of a sudden, it likely means you need washer repair

What Causes Strange Washer Noises?

As with any machine, there are multiple reasons why your washer suddenly sounds like it’s going to break apart. A common reason for washer repair is a problem with the bearings.

The washer tub rides on a bearing—a circular part with several metal balls inside—which allows it to spin without any resistance. When the bearing breaks down, it can lead to a banging, squeaking, or grinding noise, depending on what the problem is. If a bearing  breaks and the balls fall out, for instance, that causes a banging sound.

A broken or out-of-place pulley can also cause your washer to make a banging noise. The pulley helps the tub spin, but if it’s not properly placed, it can cause the tub to bang into the sides of the washer.

Other potential causes for a noisy machine include a broken motor, a clogged drain, or problems with the clutch that controls the speed of the washer. On front-loading machines, broken shock absorbers can cause banging noises during the spin cycle.

What Should I Do If My Machine Makes Loud Noises?

If you can’t diagnose the issue, then consult the manual for your machine to determine how to drain the drum so the machine can be repaired. Although some minor repairs can be tackled on your own, it’s usually best to call for professional washer repair when there are strange noises that aren’t due to an unbalanced load. Replacing bearings, for example, involves taking apart most of the machine and is best left to a professional.
