If your current HVAC system is starting to fail, consider upgrading to a more reliable and energy-efficient unit. Geothermal heat pumps are becoming increasingly popular for homeowners looking to make their properties less reliant on fossil fuels. The following guide can help you better understand how you can benefit from this system.

What to Know About Geothermal Heat Pumps

How do they work?

The temperature 10 feet beneath the earth’s surface consistently hovers around 50 degrees throughout the year. A geothermal system capitalizes on this by circulating fluid from an indoor unit to a buried ground loop. This process distributes heat inside the home in winter and dispels it outside during the summer.

Are they energy-efficient?

Approximately 70% of the energy used by geothermal systems comes directly from renewable ground energy. They tend to have a Coefficient of Performance rating between 3 and 4.5. This means three to four-and-a-half units of heat are supplied for every one unit of electricity used. They’re about 65% more efficient than traditional HVAC systems.

What are the differences between open- and closed-loop systems?

geothermalClosed-loop designs consist of buried or submerged plastic pipes that connect to an indoor heat pump. They’re filled with a liquid solution that moves heat from the ground to the home or vice versa.

An open-loop system pulls water from a local ground aquifer and cycles it to an indoor heat pump. The water then leaves the home through a discharge well located on the property. This version only works when there’s a plentiful supply of clean, fresh water available.

How long do these systems last?

The various components are located indoors, meaning they aren’t affected by the elements that can damage traditional units. While regular systems typically last for 15 years, geothermal alternatives can heat and cool your property for over 24 years. They also provide more reliable service and require less maintenance during that time.
