You may be looking forward to your upcoming laser hair removal appointment knowing you’ll achieve effortlessly smooth skin. However, if you’ve never done it before, you may not be aware of how to get the best results. Here are some best practices to follow.

Do:

Go over medications.

Talk with your skin care specialist about any medications you’re currently taking, as they may affect the results of your treatment or even cause blistering. It’s especially important to discuss antibiotics, acne medication, and birth control.

Also, check that you’re clear on how to use any oral medications they prescribe following the treatment.

Remove hair beforehand.

laser hair removalSince laser hair removal targets the root of your hair, you shouldn’t pluck or wax it in the four to six weeks leading up to your appointment. However, you should shave the designated area 24 to 48 hours prior. Doing so minimizes the risk of burns while helping the laser find the hair roots.

Make another appointment.

While laser hair removal slows growth, it doesn’t get rid of hair permanently, so you’ll likely need multiple sessions to achieve ideal results. Schedule another appointment with the medical spa anywhere from four to 10 weeks in advance, depending on which part of the body is your focus.

Don’t:

Bleach your hair.

If you habitually bleach your hair, stop for least four to six weeks before your treatment. Bleach changes the pigment of your hair roots, making it harder for the laser to find and remove them.

Wear topical treatments or makeup.

Arrive clean and showered for your appointment, but avoid putting on makeup, deodorant, lotion, or ointments, so they don’t alter the results or irritate your skin. In the three days prior, don’t use any photosensitive treatments, like salicylic or hydroxy acids and benzoyl peroxide.

Spend a lot of time in the sun.

Even minor sunburns can worsen significantly or cause blistering when exposed to lasers. Skin discoloration is also possible. For two weeks before and after your treatment, stay in the shade as much as possible, and wear sunblock daily.
