Running out of hot water in the middle of a shower can be an uncomfortable experience. Understanding why your water heater isn’t bringing the water to the right temperature can help you identify the appropriate solutions. Here are three possible reasons for showers running cold.

Why Isn’t the Shower Water Hot?

1. Low Supply

The problem could be due to supply and demand. If you’re using more hot water than your hot water heater can provide, the result will be cold or lukewarm showers. Factors that may lead to this include washing machines (on hot water cycles), dishwashers, and houseguests. If people in your household are prone to longer showers, this can also contribute to less hot water.

A water heater with a tank can only hold a limited amount of hot water at a time. If you use different appliances at the same time, it could struggle to supply the water you need. Tankless heaters can also have this issue since they can only heat up a limited amount of water per minute.

2. Thermostat Needs Adjustment

Some water heaters come with a dial on the unit’s exterior. If this isn’t the case, you might need to remove a panel to access it. Turn off the power for safety reasons, and call in a professional for help if you’re not comfortable doing it yourself.

3. Parts May Need Replacement

Over time, the working parts in a hot water heater can get worn out. The line that takes cold water to the bottom of the tank where it gets heated can deteriorate, leading to mingled hot and cold water and lukewarm showers.

If you notice water pooling around the heater’s base, there could be a leak in the tank itself. Be sure to have it looked at before the problem has time to worsen.
