You probably know that sugary treats, like candy and soda, cause cavities. However, there are many wholesome, nutritious foods that improve oral hygiene. Along with at-home dental care and regular exams with your dentist, here’s what you can eat to maintain a healthy smile.

What Foods Benefit Your Oral Health?

1. Carrots

Carrots have plenty of essential nutrients, including potassium. This mineral keeps teeth healthy by reducing the amount of calcium the body loses when urinating. Some dentists recommend chewing raw carrots, as this fibrous vegetable gently scrubs plaque and bacteria from teeth.

2. Leafy Greens

Kale and other leafy green vegetables contain tons of calcium. Kale also has many other nutrients, such as vitamin A, which promotes healthy saliva production to keep plaque from clinging to teeth. It also includes vitamin K, which is thought to play a role in the prevention of cavities (although further research is needed to determine the full impact).

3. Cheese

dentistA recent study was conducted to determine the impact cheese has on oral health. Of the 68 subjects that participated in the study, the group that snacked on cheddar saw an increase in their pH levels. This points to cheese’s anti-cavity properties, as pH levels under 5.5 indicate a greater risk of tooth decay.

4. Salmon

This fish is also an excellent source of essential nutrients. Omega-3 fatty acids reduce inflammation of the gums, which is a key feature of periodontitis. One study even showed that diets rich in omega-3s saw a lower prevalence of periodontitis.
