Toilet clogs are common and can occur at the most inconvenient times. Fortunately, many clogs can be cleared without calling a plumber. However, if you don't unclog the toilet properly, you can cause more damage. Before you reach for the plunger, keep this expert advice in mind.

A Guide to Handling Toilet Clogs

What should you do first?

If the toilet clogs, the first step to take is to stop the water from filling the bowl so that it doesn’t overflow. Remove the tank lid and reach in to manually close the flapper, which is the circular rubber piece that covers the drain and is attached to a chain.

Once you've stopped the water, evaluate the clog to determine the cause. If it’s a solid obstruction, like a toy that was flushed, put on rubber gloves and reach in to remove it. If you can’t see the obstruction, or don’t know the cause, then use the plunger.

Is there an option besides the plunger?

While a plunger is usually an effective method for removing toilet clogs, you can also use an enzyme-based product, which can typically be found in home improvement or hardware stores. In general, chemical drain cleaners should be avoided for safety purposes.

If you choose to use an enzyme product, follow the package directions, and know that they will only work on organic obstructions, not toys or other household objects. A homemade concoction of vinegar and baking soda mixed with hot water may also clear the clog, but it can take up to 24 hours to work.

When should you call a plumber?

plumberIf you can’t clear the clog on your own using either a plunger or an enzyme product, get professional help from a plumber. The issue could be more complex than a simple clog, and the clog could be a symptom of a larger problem with your plumbing or sewer line. You should also call a professional if you’re struggling to clear the clog and fear damage to the plumbing, or if the toilet clogs repeatedly.

What should you not do?

Again, clearing the typical toilet clog is usually fairly easy.  However, to prevent damage and a mess, avoiding flushing the toilet again until the blockage is removed. Don’t use too much force with the plunger, which can damage the toilet or the plumbing.

Only use the plunger when necessary. Remove obstructions with your hand or a plumbing snake whenever possible to prevent damage.
