Owning an ATV allows you to explore the great outdoors and enjoy nature in a way that you can’t on foot. However, like any other vehicle, ATVs can experience mechanical issues. Here are some common problems that may need professional ATV repair

What Are Some ATV Maintenance Issues?

1. Inability to Turn Ignition

When the ignition won’t turn or doesn’t start the engine, inspect the area carefully. Sometimes ATVs accumulate enough dirt and grime that they block the path of the key into the ignition.

Issues with the ignition system can also be related to dirty or damaged spark plugs. Check for corrosion or grime around the spark plugs, and check to see if they look damaged.

You can test spark plugs with a multimeter to see if they’re drawing a charge from your battery. If they aren’t, have an ATV repair professional replace them. You can also have them perform these inspections if you’re unsure how to do them yourself.

2. Battery That Lags

Test the car battery with a multimeter to see if it has a charge. Healthy batteries should be giving an output of around 12 volts.

If the battery doesn’t have sufficient voltage, charge it with a stand-alone charger. If you have repeated problems with the battery running low, have the alternator tested and replaced.

3. Stalled Engine

When you’re out exploring nature trails, you may not think about the dust you kick up. However, dirt can clog air filters and exhaust, which can cause issues like a stalled engine.

If the vehicle has trouble starting, bring it in for a mechanical inspection. There are many different repairs that could be needed for this issue, from a simple air filter replacement to a fuel line injector replacement.
