For the restless and curious among us, there are few things more exciting than travel. Arriving in a new country and experiencing a different culture brings a thrill that’s unparalleled in everyday life. But what if you don’t know the language of the area to which you’re traveling? Here are four ways to overcome that barrier.

What Are the Best Techniques to Overcome Language Barriers While Traveling?

1. Download an App

It’s true when they say there’s an app for everything. Before you travel, or even on the plane or cruise, download a language learning app and practice. There are literally dozens of apps from which to choose, so do some research, pick your favorite, and start learning. Your vacation will go more smoothly if you have even a few basic phrases under your belt. There are even apps that can read menus, directions, etc. and translate them, such as Microsoft Translator. Some can also translate when someone speaks to you in a foreign language.

2. Carry Pen, Paper, and Card of Where You Are Staying

travelThere’s something to be said for the non-tech ways of learning. As you travel, carry an old fashioned pen and paper with you. When you run into words you don’t know or urgently need to communicate, you can draw what you need or write down an address to hand to your taxi driver. If you are trying to return back to where you are staying buy are struggling to communicate effectively, you can use the card of where you are staying and show that to the person you are trying to ask directions from. This will be a clear understanding of where you are trying to go.

3. Listen and Learn

Don’t underestimate the power of listening. As you’re out and about in a new country or area, listen to the conversations around you. Use your pen and paper to write down phrases you hear and practice them out loud. The more you absorb from the locals, the more you’ll learn.

4. Use Simple Words

Slang, colloquialisms, and other region-specific language will get lost in translation. If you’re attempting to communicate in a foreign language, don’t bother with these and instead keep your language as literal and clear as possible. Similarly, if you don’t have the vocabulary to ask, “May I have my coffee with my dessert?” try a simpler question, like “Coffee now?” to get your point across.
