Moving an entire household requires careful planning and some serious heavy lifting. Large kitchen appliances are particularly challenging to relocate because of their bulky size and weight. If they aren’t handled properly, these items easily incur damages, which can affect their function and appeal. As such, it’s important to take certain steps to ensure your appliances arrive at your new destination in good condition. Here are a few tips to keep in mind.

Do:

Clean and dry each appliance thoroughly.

Before moving day, make sure all of your appliances have been cleaned out, so they’re ready to start using once you’re settled again. Dispose of perishables from the refrigerator and freezer and unplug the unit at least 48 hours ahead of your scheduled move. This will give it enough time to defrost and dry out, so mold doesn’t start to develop inside. Also, run a cycle in the dishwasher to remove buildup and leave it open for a few days to dry before disconnecting the hoses.

Remove detachable parts.

movingIt’s best to take all the loose components out of each appliance and pack them in a separate box, so they’re protected during the move. This includes the drawers and ice maker from your refrigerator, the oven grates, range burners, and burner caps from the stove, and the utensil rack from the dishwasher. Secure the power cords to the back of their respective appliance with tape, and place drain hoses inside wrapped in packing paper or towels.

Don’t:

Disconnect the gas lines yourself.

If you own a gas stove, it’s recommended you have the gas lines disconnected by a qualified technician. They’ll know the safest method to prevent a gas leak. They can also get you reconnected at your new home and make sure there are no potential hazards by sealing all the openings and checking the pilot light.

Fail to measure the space.

The last thing you want to find out upon arriving at your destination is that your appliances don’t fit inside. In addition to making sure they’re the right size for each designated space in your kitchen layout, you want to measure the doorways and hallways to see if they can easily be moved in. If they can’t be accommodated, you’ll need to make special arrangements to solve the problem.
