If the metal plumbing pipes in your home bang loudly when you shut the water off, or when an appliance such as a washing machine or dishwasher shuts off, you're likely experiencing a condition known as water hammer. While common, water hammer can be bothersome, and occasionally, it can be forceful enough to break a pipe. Learn more about water hammer in the guide below.

FAQ About Water Hammer

What is water hammer?

Water hammer, also known as surge pressure or hydraulic shock, occurs when water quickly changes velocity in your plumbing pipes, typically when the flow is disrupted by a blockage or an abrupt valve closure.  The velocity change results in a shockwave, causing the pipes to bang together or into the framing surrounding them, resulting in the familiar hammering sound.

Can it damage my pipes?

plumbing pipesThe most common symptom of water hammer is a sudden loud noise when the water turns off. In mild cases, it won't cause any real harm to your plumbing. However, over time, water hammer can wear away at your pipe joints and valves, potentially resulting in leaks, pipes detaching from their connections, or even bursting.

Does it affect all pipes?

While water hammer is most common in older plumbing pipes that lack the pressure regulating air cushions found in modern plumbing, it can still happen in newer pipe systems when the beneficial air chambers become blocked or waterlogged. Water hammer can also occur in both metal and plastic pipes, although it is less noticeable in plastic plumbing systems.

How do you prevent it?

Water hammer happens when the water suddenly stops inside a pipe creating a shockwave of force. Installing an air chamber creates an alternate route for the water to rebound after valve closure, ensuring it won't slam into the valve wall, preventing water hammer. You might also consider securing loose pipes. If your pipes aren't properly secured, even mild water hammer can force them to shake and strike each other.
