As you welcome a new member to the family, it’s natural to be concerned about their health and happiness. Unusual instances, such as a newborn with a tooth showing through the gums, can be a concern for new parents. These are called natal teeth, and you can work with your pediatric dentist to protect your young one’s health.

A Pediatric Dental Guide to Natal Teeth

What Causes Natal Teeth?

Natal teeth are relatively rare and occur in approximately one out of every 2,000 births. Most cases are normal baby teeth that erupted before the child was born, rather than during a later timeframe. In rarer cases, these natal teeth are in addition to the baby teeth. These are called supernumerary teeth.

This could be due to the relationship between genetics and the formation of dentin, or the material inside the teeth. Malnutrition during pregnancy can cause natal teeth development, and babies with cleft palates or lips are also at a higher risk. Medical syndromes, such as Pierre Robin, Sotos, Hallerman-Streiff, and Ellis-van Creveld, can also cause these teeth to appear.

What Do You Do About Them?

In most cases, natal teeth are nothing to be concerned about. However, it’s wise to visit a pediatric dentist to monitor your young one as the rest of their teeth develop.

If the natal tooth becomes loose because it’s underdeveloped, it could become a choking hazard. Depending on the location of the tooth, it could also rub the underside of the child’s tongue, causing an ulcer to form. If you notice any redness or swelling, or if your child seems uncomfortable during feeding, talk with a doctor about your options.
