Whether they’re four-legged or feathered, bringing a pet into your home almost always requires a few lifestyle changes. Aside from schedule adjustments and pet supply shopping, one of the more surprising tasks involves your heating and AC units. As a new member of the family, your pet’s presence ultimately affects the temperature settings, air quality, and the HVAC system itself. Here’s how.

How Getting a Pet Impacts Your Heating & AC Units

1. Increases Filter Replacement Frequency

Due to components like dander and shedding fur, you’ll need to replace the air filter more often. If your new pet is a dog, outside dirt and pollen is also a contributing factor. The frequency will differ depending on your household and allergy concerns, but pet owners usually have to change or clean their air filters monthly or every two months. A fresh filter is the best way to keep your heating and AC units running efficiently.

Clogged filters do more than hinder the system. They also negatively affect air quality. When there’s too much on it, excess particulates are free to fly around indoors. Along with replacing or cleaning the filters, you can further minimize this from happening by regularly grooming your pet—be sure to vacuum afterward. Also, don’t assume this only applies to furry pets; even birds have dander!

3. Requires Precaution

Those who are house-training their pups to potty outside must also keep an eye on the outdoor AC unit. Many dogs will lift their legs against outdoor objects, including AC units, and the chemical composition of urine can degrade the metal components, especially the coils. You can block your pet’s path to that area by setting up a small gate around the unit. Doing this will also protect the cords and wiring, which can be attractive to chewers and teething puppies.
