A mini-split HVAC system is a ductless heating and cooling appliance that controls the climate in individual rooms or zones. Because they do not have ducts, mini-splits are easy to install, and they do not have the energy losses associated with central heating and cooling systems. Below, learn about how mini-splits work and some additional benefits of these increasingly popular units.

What Are the Parts & Operation Mechanisms?

Mini-splits have two main components, one installed outdoors and the other inside. The outdoor portion is a compressor and condenser unit that is linked to the indoor portion, which is an evaporator that manages the flow of air. To produce cool air, the indoor unit takes in warm air from the room and blows it over the cold evaporator coils before transferring it back into the room. The refrigerant in the coils absorbs the heat and carries it to the outside unit, where it is deposited outdoors. To produce warm air, the heat pump of the mini-split uses the refrigerant to draw existing heat energy out of the air and then transfers it back into the room. Rooms with mini-splits are typically referred to as zones, and each zone can be set to different climate preferences.

What Are the Benefits?

mini-splitOne of the main benefits of mini-splits is that they allow for customized heating and cooling in different zones. You don't need to worry about heating or cooling rooms that aren't in use, which can also lead to significant savings on energy costs. Mini-splits are more environmentally friendly as well, without the massive energy losses of traditional ductwork and the associated costs of these losses. A traditional central air and furnace system requires the installation of a complex series of ducts and vents, but a mini-split only requires a three-inch hole in the wall, making installation fast and easy.
