Many pool owners have to contend with algae growth. Spores might enter the pool through the wind, rain, or even your swimsuit. Eventually, algae can grow between your pool tiles or on pebbling to create an unhealthy and unpleasant swimming experience. Here’s how to keep your water clean and inviting for the sunny days ahead.

How to Prevent Pool Algae

1. Create a Brushing Schedule

Regularly brushing the pool tile, or whatever other surface material you have, will keep algae from clinging onto it. Brush the steps, floor, and walls at least once a week.

Choose the right brush for the surface or you’ll cause damage. For vinyl-lined, fiberglass, and acrylic pools, a nylon brush is best because it’s soft and won't tear at the material. Alternatively, plaster and concrete pools should be scrubbed with a wire brush.

2. Maintain the Circulation System

To ensure the water is circulating properly, regularly check and clean the skimmer as well as the pump strainer baskets. These elements keep the water and sanitizing chemicals moving through your pool. You’ll also have to regularly clean or change the filter; if clogged, it might reduce water flow and increase bacterial growth.

3. Use Algaecide & Vacuum Weekly

There are three main types of algae commonly found in pools: green, yellow, and black. Green is the most common type and will often develop if the pool is in a shady spot. The yellow variety is a type of green algae that grows when chlorine levels are too low and the water is warm. The black kind is typically found in shaded areas and around cracks and tiles.

Algaecide prevents different types of algae growth by killing off the spores. For all three types, a heavy dose of Algaecide 60® should kill off algae spores and prevent them from returning.

In addition to brushing and using algaecide, vacuuming will also prevent growth. The vacuum will remove any spores floating around after scrubbing and get to those hard to reach places that might otherwise be overlooked.
