Teeth whitening treatments will help you achieve a bright, beautiful smile. However, the results aren’t permanent, so you should do what you can to preserve them. Foods and beverages can diminish your results, so avoid these four ingredients to enjoy a whiter smile longer.

What to Avoid After Getting Your Teeth Whitened

1. Coffee & Tea

These beverages contain tannins, which are an acid that can cause dark, yellow stains on the teeth. Tannins also make your smile more susceptible to damage from other acidic foods. Drink through a straw or to-go lid to reduce the liquid’s contact with your teeth, or switch to a different morning drink.

2. Citrus

These fruits are highly acidic, so they can erode tooth enamel. The yellow dentin layer is exposed as the enamel wears. Switch to less acidic fruits, like apples and pears, and be wary of citrus beverages, like orange juice and lemonade. Drinking water after enjoying citrus will also prevent enamel erosion, as the liquid will wash away the acid.

3. Berries

4. Tomato Sauce

Tomatoes combine dark pigmentation with high acidity—the perfect recipe for creating discoloration. The acidity eats away at tooth enamel and causes deep stains because the pigments cling to the teeth. The next time you make pasta for dinner, cook a recipe that calls for a white sauce to prevent discoloration.
