If you’re new to camping with an RV, it might feel overwhelming to set up a campsite for the first time. Your neighbors in the RV park will likely be happy to help and offer advice. However, it can also be helpful to have a basic checklist to help get you started. Here’s what you need to know.

How to Set Up Your RV Site

1. Prepare For Your Trip

Research the area you’ll be traveling to and make a reservation at a campground that accommodates RVs. Ask if your site requires you to back in or if it’s a pull-through site. If you’re a new RV owner, you’ll have an easier time with pull-through sites until you gain more experience with reversing and parking.

If you’re traveling with a dog, request a site near the dog park or by a grassy area. Purchase extra fuel at a gas station on the way in case you need to run your emergency generator while camping.

2. Familiarize Yourself With the Site

Make sure you park within reach of your hookups. Examine the site for low-hanging branches and space requirements that could determine your parking angle. Always try to park on level ground. Parking on uneven ground can damage an RV’s chassis and tires, and you’ll risk tipping over while camping.

3. Hook Up With Care

Attach a portable RV drinking water hose to the tank on the side of your unit and connect the other end to the campground water supply. Spray the nozzle with a disinfectant spray to protect yourself against germs from the previous tenant.

Turn the water on and check for leaks. Once the water is securely connected, attach the sewer line. For best results, use a sewer hose with a pre-secured bayonet-to-hose fitting. Be careful not to leave the black water tank valve open, or all of the liquid will flow out, leaving solids to harden and making it harder to clean them out.
